You wouldn't assume that this restaurant was the place so many celebrities have frequented. It's not in a in a strip casino nor is it in a trendy part of town. It's very unassuming, tucked away in the middle of suburbia. We drove up a few miles off the strip and there it was, surrounded by nothing but car dealerships.
As we walked in, we could tell that this was no ordinary restaurant. The foyer walls were lined with pictures of celebrities and their little love letters to the Hash House. "Best Wishes" was signed by Martha Stewart. Channing Tatum, George Takei, and Adam Richman were just a few of the dozens of celebrities, professing their love for the famous Hash House.
We were greeted with a warm welcome and immediately seated at a comfortable table. The tables were made of brushed aluminum and fashioned to the walls with nuts and bolts, giving it an industrial look. The dining room was immaculate and quiet, with a few diners scattered throughout. The sizable menu looked delicious. It was so hard to choose. We knew we had to order their famous Sage Fried Chicken and Waffles. We also decided to go for their double mushroom and swiss burger and corn beef and hash. Looking around us, Krystal and started to get a little idea of what we were getting ourselves into. Servers brought out entrees the size of small babies. From what I could see, the dining room was quiet because the diners were happily munching away.
Finally! The food came. Oh My Gosh! Talk about BIG!. The burger was literally half the size of my head.
And the Sage Fried Chicken and Waffles was literally half a chicken and a whole school of waffles. We were able to snap a few quick photos before the tower of chicken came tumbling down. Really? A toothpick wasn't enough to hold it up.
We dug in immediately.
Krystal - "Hey, Lisa, at least take the knife out of the burger."
Yum yum yum!!!! The burger was awesome! It was a perfectly composed bite. With the crunchy pickles and lettuce, the succulent tomato and the bite of the onion, it was pretty near perfect. The Swiss cheese was melty and dripping off the burger in delicious strings. And the mushrooms were plump with the perfect texture and mouth feel. I just prefer my burger a less done and more aggressively seasoned. But at $10 for over a pound of meat and probably a quarter pound of mushrooms and cheese? Hard to beat! Krystal and I shared the behemoth and still couldn't finish everything.
Chicken by itself was . . . OK. Waffle by itself was . . . OK. Waffle with chicken, drizzled with maple syrup . . . we're starting to get the chicken and waffle craze is about. But top everything with the fried leeks and WOW! They should have called this Fried Chicken and Waffles top with Yummy Fried Leeks. Haha . . . may not. But "Leeks" should have made it into the title somehow. The leeks were the star of the dish. The chicken wasn't aggressively seasoned (well, not enough for my taste) but had a wonderful sage flavor. The fried crispy leeks, however, were deliciously salty. Can you tell that I'm LOVE salt? That was the salty, savory component of the dish that, combined with the sweet maple syrup, brought everything together. I don't know if it is sacrilegious to say this or not but we would have been happy with just the waffle and the leeks, or the chicken and the leeks, or the leeks on top of more leeks. Maybe that's an idea for a new dish? Hmmmm . . . Overall, for $18, you have enough food for an entire day or to feed a small country, with some left over for breakfast the next day. Not a bad deal!
Krystal's husband Anthony polished off the corned beef before we could get a bite. So, unfortunately, we can't tell you how delicious it was. Judging from everything we ate today, I'm sure it was amazing! We did get to try the side of biscuit it came with. Deliciously buttery. That, topped with the homemade peach jam (you have to ask for it) was probably my favorite bite of the meal.
Anthony - (to the waitress) "Can I have a side of your marmalade please?"
Waitress - "We don't have marmalade. Do you mean the jam?"
Anthony - "Yeah, can I have a side of that jam?"
Lisa - (to Anthony) "Did it have rind in it? Marmalade is a citrus jam with rind in it."
Anthony - "I don't know. The marmalade is good, whatever it is." (to waitress) "What kind of marmalade is this?"
Waitress - "It's peach jam."
Haha. Well, sometimes the simplest things are the best, whatever it is!
Upon leaving, we still had about 4 pounds of chicken and waffles left. Happily stuffed and ready for a nap, we asked for our check and a doggie bag. Will we come again? YES! I would definitely recommend sharing an entree though, unless you're not the sharing type . . .
